The object as the unit of interaction between visual working memory and visual attention

چکیده
The current study aimed to answer a fundamental question regarding two central components of our cognitive system: what is the unit interaction between visual working memory (VWM) and attention. To address this crucial issue, we proposed opposing hypotheses: (a) Boolean map, which data format that can contain only one within-dimension feature (e.g., “red” or “circle”; Boolean-map-unit hypothesis); (b) an object (object-unit hypothesis). We tested these distinct hypotheses by adopting memory-driven attentional capture effect as well manipulating perceptual organization (objecthood) memorized color representations. In experiments, participants held colors in VWM from either objects, color, then performed search task sometimes contained singleton-distractor with memory-matching color. Experiment 1 assessed whether would be influenced objecthood multiple representations VWM. results showed could simultaneously guide attention when encoded integrated object, but did not they came separate objects. 2 replicated generalized different essentially similar physical formats (i.e., e.g., colored semicircles). More importantly, was equivalent single These suggested significantly influences their ability for guidance, thus supporting object-unit hypothesis. novel findings provided first evidence indicating implemented at level have implications understanding architecture

The architecture of interaction between visual working memory and visual attention.
In five experiments, we examined whether a task-irrelevant item in visual working memory (VWM) interacts with perceptual selection when VWM must also be used to maintain a template representation of a search target. This question is critical to distinguishing between competing theories specifying the architecture of interaction between VWM and attention. The single-item template hypothesis (SIT...

Visual attention is the collection of mechanisms by which relevant visual information is selected, and irrelevant visual information is ignored. Visual working memory is the mechanism by which relevant visual information is retained, and irrelevant information is suppressed. In addition to this overlap in definition, a strong overlap in brain areas active during attention and working memory tas...
متن کاملThe Effect of Working Memory Rehabilitation on Visual Memory and Memory Span
Introduction: Age-related cognitive decline or cognitive aging is largely the result of structural and functional decline in specific areas of the brain, but lifestyle also contributes to this cognitive decline. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of working memory rehabilitation on visual memory and memory span in ageing. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with pret...

abstract this study tried to investigate whether there was any significant relationship between technical translation quality of the senior english translation students and their levels of verbal-linguistic, visual-spatial and interpersonal intelligences. in order to investigate the research questions, the researcher selected a hundred senior english translation students from three universitie...
Visual working memory as visual attention sustained internally over time.
Visual working memory and visual attention are intimately related, such that working memory encoding and maintenance reflects actively sustained attention to a limited number of visual objects and events important for ongoing cognition and action. Although attention is typically considered to operate over perceptual input, a recent taxonomy proposes to additionally consider how attention can be...
